A man convincingly sold ash as sugar to a king.
The king bought and distributed it to his subjects, who happily tasted the sweetness of sugar in the ash. Why? An intelligent guy convinced them that what he sold them was sugar. At a significant cost to them, they ate rubbish. In their minds, they were enjoying sugar. As the story went, this was long ago when people were thought primitive.
In the twenty-first, in another location on this earth, an intelligent fellow is selling darkness as light to enlightened people. People get it. Unlike the ash buyers who were ignorant and thoroughly deceived, their present counterparts are fully aware, but with minimal choice, they get all darkness for light. The bill comes, and customers must pay to avoid consequences. Like the supposed sugar buyers, the money goes, leaving no customer satisfaction.
The different but sad experiences have left the victims dazed, reflecting on the sugar in darkness.
